March 30th marks International Bipolar Awareness Day — a day dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and reminding those living with bipolar disorder that they are not alone. At Blessed Family Care & Mental Wellness, we stand with the millions of individuals and families affected by this condition.
What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by significant shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels. These shifts — known as episodes — range from periods of extreme elation and high energy (mania or hypomania) to periods of deep sadness and low energy (depression). Unlike everyday mood swings, these episodes can be intense, last for extended periods, and significantly impact a person's daily functioning, relationships, and quality of life.
According to the World Health Organization, bipolar disorder affects approximately 45 million people worldwide. It does not discriminate — it can affect people of any age, background, or gender.
Recognizing the Signs & Symptoms
Early recognition is key. While only a qualified healthcare professional can provide a diagnosis, there are common signs to be aware of across both phases:
Manic Episode Signs
Unusually elevated or irritable mood
Decreased need for sleep
Racing thoughts or rapid speech
Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity
Impulsive or risky behavior
Increased goal-directed activity
Depressive Episode Signs
Persistent sadness or hopelessness
Loss of interest in activities
Fatigue and low energy
Difficulty concentrating
Changes in sleep or appetite
Thoughts of death or self-harm
Treatment & Hope
It is important to emphasize: bipolar disorder is treatable. With the right support and care plan, individuals can lead fulfilling, stable lives. Evidence-based treatment approaches typically include a combination of:
Recovery is not linear — it looks different for everyone. But seeking help is always the right first step.
